How to Calculate Board Exam Percentage — Step by Step
The method to calculate board exam percentage is the same for all boards — you need the total marks obtained in all subjects and the total maximum marks. However, different boards have different subject structures, maximum marks per subject, and whether internal/practical marks are included. Our calculator handles all these variations automatically based on your selected board.
Step-by-Step Percentage Calculation
- Step 1: Collect your marks for each subject from your mark sheet or result card.
- Step 2: Note the maximum marks for each subject (usually 100 per subject for main subjects).
- Step 3: Add all obtained marks across all subjects to get total obtained marks.
- Step 4: Add all maximum marks across all subjects to get total maximum marks.
- Step 5: Apply the formula: Percentage = (Total Obtained ÷ Total Maximum) × 100
- Step 6: Round to 2 decimal places for accuracy.
Example (CBSE Class 10): If you scored Mathematics: 92, Science: 88, Social Science: 85, English: 90, Hindi: 87 — Total = 442 out of 500. Percentage = (442 ÷ 500) × 100 = 88.40%

How Percentage Affects College Admissions
Your board exam percentage is the primary criterion for college admissions across India. For undergraduate programs at Delhi University (DU), students need 90%+ for popular courses. For engineering through JEE, boards require minimum 75% (or top 20 percentile). For medical admissions through NEET, 50% in Physics, Chemistry, Biology is mandatory. IIT/NIT/IIIT admissions require Class 12 board percentage as an eligibility criterion.
State universities typically use board percentage as the direct admission criterion. Many government job applications specify minimum 60% or 50% in Class 10 or Class 12. Central government jobs and UPSC require specific percentage cutoffs mentioned in their notifications. Understanding your exact percentage is therefore crucial for knowing which opportunities are open to you.
Tips to Improve Your Board Exam Percentage
- Focus on scoring 90+ in your strongest subjects — each extra mark in a strong subject is easier to get than struggling marks in a weak one.
- For CBSE's "best of 5" policy, strategically ensure your 5 best subjects are your written exam subjects, not just electives.
- Internal assessment marks (20 per subject in CBSE) are easier to score — never neglect practicals, projects, or periodic tests.
- Solve 10 years of previous papers — question patterns repeat significantly in all boards, especially in UP Board, Bihar Board, and MP Board.
- Target full marks in objective/MCQ sections of Bihar Board — these 50 marks are easier to secure than subjective portions.
- In Maharashtra Board and Karnataka Board, science practical exams carry 30 marks — thorough preparation here can boost your percentage significantly.
- For ICSE students, choose your optional subject strategically — subjects like Home Science, Computer Applications, or Physical Education are scoring.
CGPA to Percentage: How to Convert
Several boards including CBSE (for a period) and many universities use CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) instead of percentage. Converting CGPA to percentage helps students understand their standing and calculate eligibility for various programs. The standard conversion used by CBSE is:
For example, a CGPA of 9.2 = 9.2 × 9.5 = 87.4%. This formula is officially prescribed by CBSE. Note that this is an approximate conversion — it's not a one-to-one mapping with the actual percentage of marks scored. Universities accepting CBSE students are aware of this conversion and accept it for admissions.
For other boards that use grade points (like Tamil Nadu Board's 10-point system), the conversion formula may differ. Always check the official conversion formula specified by your board or the admitting institution, as some colleges calculate their own percentage equivalent by requesting the actual marks obtained.
Frequently Asked Questions — Board Percentage Calculator
UP Board Class 10 (High School) has 6 subjects — Hindi, English, Mathematics, Science, Social Science, and one optional subject — each carrying 100 marks. Total maximum marks = 600. Formula: Percentage = (Sum of marks in all 6 subjects ÷ 600) × 100. For example, if you scored 420 out of 600, your percentage = (420 ÷ 600) × 100 = 70%. Use our UP Board tab in the calculator above to get instant, accurate results with subject-wise breakdown. UP Board result is declared on upmsp.edu.in.
Bihar Board (BSEB) Class 10 Matric mein 5 compulsory subjects hote hain — Hindi, English, Mathematics, Science, Social Science — pratyek mein 100 marks, total 500 marks. Percentage = (Total Obtained Marks ÷ 500) × 100. Class 12 Intermediate mein bhi 5 subjects hote hain, but stream ke according alag subjects hote hain (Science, Commerce, Arts). The main difference is in the number of subjects and maximum marks. CBSE Class 10 calculates percentage based on 5 subjects (total 500 marks), while UP Board Class 10 uses 6 subjects (total 600 marks). CBSE also has a "best of 5" provision where the 5th subject can be replaced by an additional subject if the student scores better. UP Board does not have this provision and counts all 6 subjects. Both boards use the same basic formula: (Total Obtained ÷ Total Maximum) × 100. Our calculator automatically applies the correct structure for each board.
CBSE Class 12 percentage is calculated based on 5 main subjects, each out of 100 marks (70 theory + 30 internal/practical for most subjects). Total maximum marks = 500. Percentage = (Sum of marks in 5 subjects ÷ 500) × 100. For competitive exam eligibility (JEE, NEET), the percentage is based on PCM or PCB subjects specifically. For college admissions, the aggregate percentage of all 5 subjects is used. CBSE also issues a special mark sheet showing subject-wise grades and the overall percentage.
Select "MP Board" tab in our calculator, choose Class 10 or Class 12, and enter your marks in each subject. MP Board Class 10 (High School Certificate) has 6 subjects — Hindi, English, Mathematics, Science, Social Science, Sanskrit/Other — each carrying 100 marks (total 600). Class 12 (Higher Secondary Certificate) has 5 subjects based on your stream. A "good" percentage depends on your goals: For top colleges in Delhi (DU, JNU, etc.) in popular courses — 95%+ is competitive. For state government colleges — 70%+ is generally good. For engineering admissions (JOSAA/State Counselling) — 75% aggregate is the minimum eligibility for most NITs/IITs. For medical admissions (NEET) — 50% in PCB is minimum; top MBBS colleges typically want 90%+. For government jobs — most require 50-60% aggregate. Above 90% is considered outstanding, 75-90% is very good, 60-75% is good, and 45-60% is average.
RBSE Class 10 has 6 subjects — Hindi, English, Mathematics, Science, Social Science, and Sanskrit/Third Language — each carrying 100 marks, totaling 600. RBSE Class 12 has 5 subjects totaling 500 marks. Percentage = (Total Obtained ÷ Total Maximum) × 100. Minimum passing marks is 33% in each subject. RBSE results are declared on rajeduboard.rajasthan.gov.in. Our Rajasthan Board tab in the calculator gives instant results with your division (Pratham Shreni/Dwitiya Shreni/Tritiya Shreni) and grade.

Yes, our calculator is built with the exact marking structure of each board based on their official syllabi and examination patterns. We regularly update it to reflect any changes in board examination patterns. The calculator uses the standard formula (Total Obtained ÷ Total Maximum × 100) with the correct maximum marks for each board's current examination pattern. For the most official result, always cross-check with your mark sheet. Note that some boards round percentages to 2 decimal places while others round to whole numbers.
If you failed in one subject, you are technically in a "compartment" status in most boards. However, the percentage is still calculated based on all subjects including the failed one. For example, if you scored 25 in Mathematics (failing) but total marks = 380/500, your percentage = 76%, but you would be in compartment for Mathematics. You must pass the compartment exam to get a full pass result. Some boards like CBSE allow compartment in one or two subjects. After passing compartment, your new marks replace the old ones in the percentage calculation.
For CBSE: CGPA = Percentage ÷ 9.5. So if your percentage is 85%, CGPA = 85 ÷ 9.5 = 8.95. For other universities using a 10-point scale: CGPA ≈ Percentage ÷ 10. For 7-point GPA scale: CGPA = (Percentage - 50) ÷ 10. Different universities use different conversion formulas, so always check the specific institution's conversion policy. Our CGPA calculator tool (link below) handles all major conversion formats.
Karnataka Board (KSEAB) SSLC (Class 10) has 6 subjects including compulsory Kannada, English, Hindi/Other Language, Mathematics, Science, and Social Science. Tamil Nadu Board SSLC (Class 10) has 6 subjects totaling 600 marks and HSC (Class 12) has 6 subjects (4 main + 2 languages) totaling 600 marks. Minimum passing marks in both boards is 35%. Our calculator has separate tabs for both boards with their exact subject structures.
